Forsaking All

Our prayer is that you would be blessed by this ministry. That's where it started, forsaking all. Luke 14.33 says, So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciples. cannot be his disciples. [00:00:42] That's where I started, and that's where I thought I was going to go, and I kept going backwards. Boy, I'm always backwards. I can get so... So I'm not even sure if I'll get there. But anyways, here we are this morning. As kind of an introduction, I wanted to remind us that in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. He created all these things for us. [00:01:15] A world full of useful things, things that are going to keep us alive, food, beautiful things for us to enjoy. We have a lot of things that we can enjoy today. I know he didn't maybe create the computer or the cars or games way back then, but he has blessed us with a lot of things. and I want to underline things. [00:01:55] They were to be used by us. These things are to be used by us externally. And our hearts, when God created us, God was in the center of our heart. And when sin came in, what happened? Because of sin, now because of sin, we tend to put those things that are to be enjoyed externally. [00:02:31] I think I said that right. We put them on our heart's throne. Or God is supposed to be number one in our lives. And we'll see a lot of verses. And God, we allow things into our lives. We put things number one. All of a sudden, God is not number one anymore. And I really think that that is where our spiritual trouble starts. [00:03:06] When God is not number one in our hearts. and we may not even realize it, but we're really not at peace. Maybe we can look around and see people who really aren't peaceful because they don't have God in their life. They don't even have God, they don't have Him as number one in their life. And they're always striving for more. They're not at peace. You know, our fallen natures are always wanting to possess things, covet things. [00:03:46] And sometimes it's with this deep passion that we want more things, or that we want something. And sometimes when we feel like we don't even, we shouldn't even really get it or we don't really have the money, we find a way to have it. Look at how these lenders have loaned out so many loans for 110% of the value of the home. [00:04:19] They'll find a way to get what they want, no matter what. I had to think of the words my, mine, I. We're so focused on ourselves. Our hearts are rooted deep into things. And I underlined thing again. This fallen nature, this deep passion, we feel like if we give up things, they're not going to be, you know, we need to take care of these things. [00:05:02] It's like if we cut out things, if we give up our stuff, it would be like dying or something. We have to, but we have to root out things out of our lives. We have to root out the things that we feel like are so very important and go back to God and put Him in our hearts, number one. And I had to think of one time while cutting wood and stuff at home, [00:05:37] We were digging out these trees and pushing them over these locust trees. You know, you can, with our little skid loader, you can push over a locust tree like this big around. Push it right over, it's no problem. And there was a walnut tree there that I didn't really know it was a walnut tree until later, but it was just a little guy like this. And I tried to, boy, I dug around in that thing something. I pushed and pushed and stalled the skid loader several times. [00:06:07] I could not push that thing over. I finally gave up. He was just a little fella. And I would dig down and dig down and dig down. And there was this big old taproot went way down in, you know, big old thing. Now locust tree, they're just kind of, you know, they don't go down so much. They go out. And it seems like sometimes, now one thing is, we cannot have things being rooted so deep like a walnut tree [00:06:42] and yet be rooted so deep in Christ at the same time. We cannot be. If we don't, you know, we know the whole story of when you pick a dandelion, You know, those things have nasty roots too. You can't just pick it off and it's going to die. It's going to spring up again. The same way with trees. You know, you can cut down a big old oak tree like this and several months later the thing can be sprouting back up again. You have to take it out by the root. We have got to take out these things, this deep desire, this passion for things. [00:07:19] Take things out of our life. This love of things, this desire of things, this coveting of things, we have to root it out. We have to put God back in His place in our hearts and not allow His gifts into our hearts to be number one. Being a true Christian, a real Christian, a sold-out disciple of Christ, [00:08:02] we need to be committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. And maybe that's a very duh statement. But a lot of times I forget what it is to be sold out. Do we know what it means to be sold out? Do we know what it means to be committed? Do we know what it means to forsake all? You know, even that one little phrase, forsake all that he has. And how do we do that? You know, God doesn't want people who will just, he doesn't want our spare time. [00:08:36] He doesn't want our Wednesday evenings. He doesn't want our, well, we're not doing anything tonight. Or he doesn't want our Sundays, our Saturday afternoons and our evenings to prepare. No, he wants all of us. He wants our lives. He wants all of our time. He wants all of our money. He wants all of our thoughts, all of our possessions. Well, what's he going to do with all of our possessions? He wants us to be fully surrendered. He wants our savings account. [00:09:06] I had to question myself, could I be giving more to the church? Could I be giving more to a brother in need? Could I be giving more somehow? Money, I'm talking. Would that be possible? Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that each one of us could say, yeah, we could probably give more. There would probably be something to give out. I got a couple cars and vehicles sitting around at home not doing anything. Well, we might need them, and we're not going to get very much money for them. We better would just save them. But I thought, you know, Dustin sold a vehicle, I thought, man, why do I got this Mazda Protege sitting around doing nothing? [00:09:44] I don't have any insurance on it, but could I, if it's okay that I got money wrapped up in that thing just sitting there, could I just sell it and give it to a mission? The whole thing. What other, you know, here I am with this nice new house and big pole barn and 16 acres of woods and a horse. Here I am with all of this stuff and feeling very convicted of the things in my savings account, my checkbook. [00:10:21] Yes, we need to run a business, we need to have some, I think the right word is capital, right Dustin? We need to have some money to operate a farm. But what is really my essential things? What do I really need to have? I ask Jamie that all the time. Do you need another sweatshirt? Well, back at you, Dad. That's what he should be saying. [00:10:56] Dad, what do you really need? What are your needs? What do I do with Jesus? You know, God expects nothing less. To be a disciple. You know, I'm a Christian. If I'm calling myself a Christian, if I'm a disciple of Jesus Christ, God expects nothing less than all. Or else I can't be His. [00:11:33] And if we look at what he did on the cross, he died for us, okay? We can say that, and we can say that, and we can say that. So, I'm not understanding quite why I know what he did for me on the cross. I have all kinds of books. We hear all kinds of good sermons. We have great discussions and we have all this knowledge. [00:12:03] We know what is right. We're born into Christian homes. We're born in America with all this luxury, all these things. We're blessed, blessed, blessed. Forget the material things. Even just spiritually, we are blessed people. and seeing what God, Christ, died in total obedience to his Father, [00:12:36] totally surrendered, whatever your will is, Father, I'm here to do your work. He came down from heaven to live in the gutters and in the slums for me. And then he died yet while I was still a sinner, while I was his enemy. I wasn't his friend or his brother or anything. I was a sinner. An enemy. I don't know if, would any of us do that? Would I die? And then, for some reason, it seems like, because I know that, our expected, our obvious response to that is, Lord, I give you everything. [00:13:18] Why wouldn't I? Why does it make it Why do I make it so hard on myself? Why wouldn't I give everything? If He has given everything for me while I was an enemy. Why is it that we as Christians don't sell out and give out? Give up everything. I was going to bring along a little article out of Voice of the Martyrs and I wanted to read it, but the founder of Voice of the Martyrs, I think his last name is Wormbrand or something, does anybody know or something like that? [00:14:10] But he wrote a little something. I think he died in 01. But he was writing about how he was explaining to this Russian pastor. He was trying to explain to him, and this pastor was a sold-out Christian, trying to explain to him this systematic theology, I think is what they said. I don't know that much about it. Maybe y'all do the systematic theology, you know, and we got to do the same thing. Well, okay, Christ died for us. And we need to ask for forgiveness. And, you know, this whole thing that we can explain out, you know, and this Russian pastor said, you know, when I'm talking about have you ever thought systematically when you are bearing your cross? [00:15:01] Do we even know what it's like to have to bear the cross? Do we know what it's like to be persecuted? I know I don't. And then why don't I? And this pastor said something about, he understands that Mr. Wurmbrand, I understand that you are just saying, trying to teach me what you have been told. [00:15:45] In other words, he doesn't know anything about it. Do we know what it is to take up our cross and follow him? Do I really understand what it's like, what it is to be a soldier? You know, we can, okay, we know of these Muslims and people who, even communists, who will die for their cause. [00:16:22] They'll give up their life. They'll give everything for their cause, for their religion, for their political, religious reasons. They choose to do that. Even these soldiers, the United States Army, Marines and Navy people, their life, And they go through, and you know, I don't know anything about it, I've never been one, you know, we've got these war documentaries and all this stuff. [00:16:57] We know what soldiers have went through, blood, a lot of pain, a lot of tears, your friends are dying beside you, and a lot of sweat and hard work. And yet, what do you get for it? Maybe a free education in a couple of years, I'm not sure. Do we know what it's like to give up everything like a soldier and forsake all and just enlist in God's army? Come what may. Lord, send me where you want. [00:17:28] You know, this guy, he don't know if he's going to Iran. He don't know if he's going to Africa. He don't know if he's going to Germany. He just says, I'm voluntary. Here I am. Use me. Whatever is best for the cause of the United States, this is what I'm going to do. Well, where are we at? Lord, use my things. You can have whatever I want. You can have my money. I think it was with Brad's, you know, would I... We were talking one evening, I think it was with them. [00:18:01] Would I sell everything and give it to the church and say I'm going on the mission field? Is that where I'm at? And I have been thinking about that on and on and on while sitting in my office. It's a nice beautiful green office. And you know, my heart says yes. I mean, my mind does maybe. But it would be hard, man. It is a nice house. It's really comfortable there. [00:18:35] And even, you know, we're going down to Jamaica and I keep teasing Jamie, you know, We're just going to stay up there all nine days up at Mount Pillier. Not nine years, don't laugh, I didn't mean that. We're just going to sleep up there. Yeah, right. Brittany and I did one time. Oh my word, I've never had so many mosquito bites. Didn't sleep good. But to think of even the comfort of a hotel, a $60 hotel, and that. You know, I'd rather, or even the Mission House compared to Mount Pillar, you know, am I really willing to travel down there for just nine days, just nine days, that's it. [00:19:16] Would I give up my hotel to sleep up there and to be with them 24-7 and just to be a light and a witness and to share God's Word. But yet I'll probably go down there and stay in a hotel. Do I really understand what it is to be a soldier of Jesus Christ? [00:19:47] Am I denying myself and taking up my cross? Am I a true disciple of Jesus Christ? So what are the conditions of being a disciple? I wrote, I think there's seven. Seven things that Jesus said himself. This is how you can know if you're a disciple of Jesus Christ. The first one is in Luke 14. [00:20:27] I'll read 26 and 27. If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me, he cannot be my disciple. There's a bunch of them in there and we'll pick them out. But the first one I wanted to talk about was one way that we can know a condition or a test or one way we can know if we're a disciple, excuse me, is our love for Jesus. [00:21:14] Is it supreme? Also, Matthew 10, verse 37, I think. He who loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me. and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. So, a question to ask ourselves. Do I love God more than anything? Honestly. [00:21:45] Is Christ number one? Or do I love my children, my family or my job or whatever it is? Do I love myself more than God, more than Christ? In Matthew, He doesn't mention in His life also, but in Luke it does. We're really not where God wants us to be unless we have laid our lives down for Him. And how do we do that? [00:22:15] The second one I wrote down is denying ourselves. Some people have said that there's a difference between self-denial and denying ourselves. And I think that all goes together. One thing I wanted to note before I get into that is there in Matthew 16, it says if anyone desires, in other words, nothing is forced, it's all voluntary. [00:22:58] And the whole denying ourselves, you know, do you think that he's talking just about certain foods? I need to deny myself of food a little more often. I'm putting back all this weight back on. Or pleasures or possessions. I think it can be that, but more than that. I also think it's deeper than that. I think that denying ourselves, it's like, it's the whole thing of me taking myself off of the throne, off of my heart's throne. [00:23:44] I'm number one. Rooting that out, that takes a lot of pain to root out something that deep and putting God there. I give up my rights, give up my authority, and make God ruler. And that's a lot easier said than done, at least for me. For some reason, it's really easy to tolerate, I guess I would say that, [00:24:20] it's easy to tolerate self-life. You know, our self-life just wants and wants. Can't get enough unless we come under submission of Him, to Him. You know, Jesus is, all throughout, you know, Jesus is calling us to embrace, or like, He's wanting us to do His will. [00:25:06] Jesus did that with the Father, to His Father. He embraced His will. He made it number one. Look, I'm not doing anything except Your will. And it was to His own expense. He had to give up His life. I think denying ourselves is saying no to those strong desires of our nature, If we allow this enemy, our fallen nature, ourselves, if we allow this enemy of Christ to live, we will in the end lose everything. [00:25:51] But if we give up everything for Christ's sake, we will in the end have everything, eternal life. In Matthew and Mark and Luke, they all kind of say the same thing. I had to think of the verse where it says, What is it profit a man? Or what is his advantage? What advantage is it if he gained the whole world and lose his own soul? The third condition of discipleship is we must choose the cross. [00:26:24] and that may be a again it says if anyone desires to come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross. I really think that that is That's a way to destroy this enemy of self-life by taking up his cross. [00:27:05] And what does that mean? I like how, I think it's Luke here. I think it's in Luke where it says, he even adds the word daily, take up his cross daily. And it's not a one-time thing. The cross, how do we take up the cross? What's he talking about? What did the Russian pastor tell, mean when he said that? [00:27:37] That it's hard to think systematically when you're really bearing the cross. And to bear the cross or to take up our cross is all the pain and suffering that we, It's not that we have these infirmities where we get sick. Everybody gets sick. You have to choose the cross. It's not that the cross is God allows an accident. [00:28:09] We just have to bear the cross. No, that's not what he's talking about. We choose the cross. And what I mean by that, I think, is what Jesus meant maybe is... Boy, I hate talking for Jesus, but I guess I have to. I think it's what he meant is, it's the pain that you choose to deny yourself. And that can be anything from, it's going to be a daily thing. Okay, God tells me that I shouldn't, I need to stop eating. [00:28:42] Or it's just, boy, why does eating come into mind all the time? Um, or maybe it's, uh, movies. Hey, you shouldn't be, you really shouldn't get that movie. Or maybe, whatever it is that you have to deny yourself. And maybe that doesn't sound so big. I mean, it's anything from that little thing all the way up to, you're in China, you're a persecuted Christian. [00:29:13] They put you on the firing squad line there. They say, are you a Christian? You say yes. And they shoot you dead or take your head or kill your wife or whatever. See, that's what we think of taking up our cross. We think of something big. But it's not necessarily just that. It's the everyday choice to deny yourself. Sometimes when God has been telling me that I need to deny myself and I choose not to be, it's just a little thing. It's not little. It's big. God has called us to deny ourselves and all these little, okay, you know, if you have a bunch of, if you pick one blueberry, what's the big deal? One blueberry in a five gallon bucket. Anybody else pick blueberries before? [00:30:08] Grace, you ever pick blueberries? You pick one and it's just like a little but a whole bunch of little ones are they get pretty heavy after a while. Dad, carry this bucket. So, every day we deny ourselves. We take up our cross. We deny ourselves. Every little bit counts because God sees what we do. God knows what we do. God knows if we are denying ourselves. God knows if we are living according to the flesh. living after the flesh [00:30:38] looking out for ourselves God knows our comments and our thoughts to protect ourselves and to big up ourselves and we're to deny ourselves we're not called to as Christians to make ourselves look better make ourselves look good when we make a mistake tell a little bit of a untruth but not a lie just so that we don't look so dumb That's not denying ourselves. When we choose Christ, anytime God says, hey, choose me, don't deny me. [00:31:22] And I've failed miserably. Any one of us can avoid the cross by being conformed to the world in its ways. It's an American dream. Here we go. You know, this American dream, it's an American dream. It's not a Christian dream. It's not the dream of Jesus. You know, think about what the American dream is. We are not of this world. [00:31:53] We call ourselves Christians. Walk as he walked. How did Jesus walk? Didn't even have a place to lay his head. What did he do for you? What did he really do for you? Oh, yes. You know, I'm so with Dave and Jeanette. Praise the Lord. I don't want to take nothing away from that. Look at what he has done for them. And what is he calling us to? [00:32:24] What is he calling me to? You know, I know that we need jobs. I hope you guys know what I'm trying to say. It's not that a job is wrong. Okay, number four. Next thing he says is, follow me. and follow me. Take up this cross and follow me. Walk as he walked. Jesus' life was a life of obedience and we went over that weeks ago. [00:33:03] He lived his life in obedience to the will of his Father and the only way that he could do it was with the power of the Holy Spirit. That's the only way that we can. He lived a life of unselfish service to others, expecting no glory because of it. You know, I know that there's been times when I wanted to do something for somebody so that I get a name. Boy, that's almost hard to say. [00:33:37] But it's true. And here Jesus wasn't trying to big up his name. He was not trying to, he wanted to honor and glorify God. He was patient and long-suffering when he was wronged in the worst way. He was patient and long-suffering when he was wronged in the worst way. [00:34:08] What do I do when I'm wronged? Wrongfully, I mean, it's... You know, there's even times when I'm not wronged and I feel like I was wronged. And then I really, I get mad about that. When really, it's the other person. It was really my fault to begin with, but for some reason this... But then I put the blame all back on to Jamie. Well, Jamie, you this and this... I'm not sure why I'm talking about Jamie. But you did this and so that means I can [00:34:40] No, that doesn't mean that I can slam him back And it's all to protect my name To make me so I don't look so bad And here Jesus was wrong And he was patient and long-suffering He was full of zeal Self-control He was meek, He was kind, He was faithful. And in order to be His disciples, it says that we must follow Him. [00:35:16] We must walk as He walked. John 15.8 says, Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, so shall ye be my disciples. And this is daily, okay? It comes through prayer, fasting. You know, have I ever fasted that I would just, Lord, I need more of you and I need to give up myself. [00:35:52] Go without food and say, Lord, I mean business. Do I really depend on Him for strength and power? Number five, a condition of discipleship. John 13, 35. By this, all will know that you are my disciples, if ye have love for one another. [00:36:38] This love, I kind of wrote, copied down 1 Corinthians 13, 4-7, Dustin. This love esteems others better than themselves. This love covers a multitude of sins. You know, that first phrase there, this love esteems others better than themselves. You know, it's pretty easy to say that, but to live that, when we're backed in the corner and we're looking pretty stupid. [00:37:17] If we make a comment and somebody says, hey, that's not quite true, then we just all, we want to fight back. This love suffers long, is kind, this love does not parade itself, it is not puffed up, does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things for good and for the good of others. [00:37:58] He had a nice discussion in Sunday school in those verses. Do you think it would be fair to say that without this love that we are not His disciple? Is it fair to say that? If we don't have that kind of love, we're not His disciple. Number six, another characteristic of a disciple is, I wrote, continue, continue, ongoing, abiding in his word. [00:38:35] There's been a lot of talk on abiding in his word and I'm going to say it again. John 8, 31, if you abide in my word, you are my disciples for sure. I think it says indeed. For real discipleship, there must be abiding. We need to stay there. I was telling Verba, I thought of the word, I don't know, what was it? Spasmatic. I think that's the word I was looking for. [00:39:06] You know how your back sometimes spasms maybe three times out of the year, maybe sometimes it's every other week, I don't know. Or you get a spasm down your hip because it's out of place or whatever. Am I a spasmatic Christian? We in school used to say, you're spazzing out. What are you talking about? Or, you know, do I read my Bible in spasms every once in a while? Or am I abiding in? You know, it's easy to start a marathon. [00:39:43] I have to think of those runners. Man, I'm serious, I can't run. Maybe it's because I eat too much. There we go again. But you start running a marathon. And a lot of them, you know you've got to set the pace. But it's really easy to be all excited about this race. Right, Davis? You're going to run four miles. And you and Peyton are racing. And Davis, they take off strong and hard. And they get about a half a mile. You know, that's what I would do. [00:40:16] Boy, you start off strong. But the test is the endurance to the end. That's the test. You know, we want to start off right. Don't get me wrong. We need to start off right. We need to start off as a born-again Christian. You know, it's not that living the Christian life makes you a Christian. Is it? Uh-uh. No, and you'd be a Christian first. Once we're a Christian, then we live the Christian life. [00:40:52] Not sure why I said all that, but... But, endurance, continuing, abiding, ongoing in His Word. Christ wants us to follow Him in constant obedience, unquestioning obedience. And then number seven, Luke 14, 33. [00:41:32] So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciples. I think I'll probably save that one for later. And I heard Leon and Brad talking about some things that would be interesting to hear more about. But I was also thinking of, in this forsaking all, I'll maybe say a little bit about it. [00:42:06] If we go to Genesis chapter 22 and we look at Abraham, Genesis 22 verse 1, Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham, Abraham said, here I am. Then he said, Take now my son, your only son, oh, take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and on and on. [00:42:44] I really wondered if he loved him too much. Why did he ask him to give up his son? Do you think that he loved his son too much? Do you think that he loved his son more than he loved God? And he tells him to offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains on which I shall tell you. And so Abraham rose early in the morning. [00:43:17] Verse 5, Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey, the lad and I will go yonder and worship. Can't hardly... He called it worship because he knew he was going to be obeying God, doing what he said. But, you know, this whole story, he really, he had to forsake all that he has in order to get to that point. [00:43:50] To be willing to sacrifice his own son. The thing that I kept thinking about in closing here was, you know, like I was saying before, in these days, you know, we have so many books and we have so many, Look at sermonindex.com and we're around godly men here in this church and we have wonderful sermons and wonderful devotions and as everybody is seeking God and we come together and we fellowship and we share what we're learning and challenging each other and you know we need to be growing and I believe that we are. [00:44:47] This whole thing of forsaking all, you know, for myself, I don't want it to be just another, I learned something new. But, you know, it's just more doctrine and more knowledge and just to be stored away is something that, but I really feel like for me in my life, it's this huge step that God is trying to, and I can't sidestep it and go on [00:45:19] on my journey of growing closer to Him I think that I need to learn it I need to take that step and give in and for everybody it's going to be different for me than it is for Dave or Sam or everybody is going to be led I'm not saying that each one of us has to sell everything we have and give it to a bunch of different missions and that's how we're going to live For everybody it's going to be a little different, and that's okay. And I'm not to decide what LeVon's supposed to do. I'm not supposed to decide what Jim, what God's telling Jim. [00:45:51] We all need to seek God. You know, we've been, what song, I was going to try and remember, I think it was, Enos, what song did you lead, or did you request that, just this morning? Yeah, yeah, I forget. Maybe we could sing that song again. Three something? We need. God is calling us. We have to. Well, we don't have to. We volunteer to. [00:46:22] But God wants us to. We call ourselves Christians to seek Him. Take that step. Let's not stop that progress. Am I truly, honestly, totally surrendered? Take my life and let it be. Boy, I'd want to read it. I think it's in the 374 in the black book. [00:47:02] Is this really my prayer? Because what we're singing here is a huge commitment here. Do we really realize what we're saying? Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee. Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of Thy love. Take my feet, let them be swift and beautiful for thee. [00:47:36] Take my voice, let them sing. Let me sing, always only for my King. Or are they sometimes some songs that are not really for Him? Always only for my King. Take my lips, let them be filled with messages from thee. Take my silver and my gold. Boy, now you're stepping on a sore spot. Not a mite would I withhold. Take my will and make it thine. [00:48:11] It shall be no longer mine. I'm telling you. Take my heart. It is thine own. It shall be thy royal throne. Take my love, my Lord. Lord, I pour it at thy feet, its treasure store. Take myself, and I will be ever only all for thee. Let's pray for each other. We need to pray for each other, because I don't know if you all noticed, but it's pretty rough in life. [00:48:53] I mean, and this is nothing. We live in luxury, dude. I mean, I can't imagine standing in the middle of a river in the middle of the night worshiping like this. Praising God for what He's done for us. In a river. Because they're going to come in and take our children and slaughter them or cut off my wife's head or whatever. We don't have to worry about that. Here we are. It's nice and warm in here. It's kind of chilly this morning, but I'm not complaining. [00:49:26] Look at our blessings. Why wouldn't we? Not just possessions. What has God done for you?
